M. THORNTON BRICEMr. M. Thornton Brice, age 82, passed away peacefully on August 15, 2017.A visitation will be held at 1pm, August 20, 2017 at Broadmoor Baptist Church with a memorial service to follow. Thornton was born on March 6, 1935 to Maben R. Brice and Mertice L. Brice at Tri State Hospital in Shreveport, Louisiana. He was a 1953 graduate of Byrd High School and continued his education at
Louisiana State University. Except for his two years of military service and a short stay in Houston, Texas, he lived and worked in his home town. Thornton began his insurance career in 1958. He had been an Agent, Supervisor District Agent, Associate General Agent, and then General Agent having his own successful insurance Agency.Thornton served in all chairs for the Shreveport Chapter of CLU and the local Association of Life Underwriters. In 1978, he served as both the President of the Shreveport Association of Life Underwriters and the CLU's Association simultaneously making him the only person to hold both Presidencies at the same time. In 1979, Thornton was chosen as Man of the Year by the Shreveport Association of Life Underwriters, which gained national recognition that particular year. Thornton was also a member of the Million Dollar Round Table. Thornton was a lifelong member of Broadmoor Baptist Church and a member of Dr. Tom Harrison's Sunday School class. Thornton was an avid fisherman and served as President of the Ark-La-Tex Bass Club. He spent many happy hours fishing with his friends, his two sons, and his grandson.Through his community involvement, he was active as a coach in his children's sports and served as President of the Booster Club at Captain Shreve when his sons attended school there. As a proud graduate of Byrd, he served as President of the Alumni Association and was also elected to the Board of Directors of the Alumni Association. In 2001, he was inducted into the Byrd High School Hall of Fame. Thornton was active in fundraising drives for both the Centenary Gents Club as well as Byrd High School. As the Chairman of the Alumni Association, he raised the funds for the Byrd High School corner monument in 1997. While serving as the Membership Chairman for three years, he doubled the membership in the organization and initiated the Lifetime Memberships. In 2000, he headed Byrd's 75th Anniversary Fund while also supervising the refurbishing of the Byrd auditorium and playing an instrumental role in raising the funds for the Byrd High School Field of Dreams. Thornton was a family man and loved his family. He was a hands on father and grandfather; always involved with his sons and grandchildren's activities. He never missed an activity of theirs from ball games to school events. He will be missed by his family, especially his wife Linda of 62 years. Thornton was preceded in death by his parents and his sister, Courtney Ann Pope.He is survived by his wife; Linda Keener Brice, his children Curtis Brice, Robert(Bobby) Brice and his wife Erika; grandchildren Dr. Jordan Brice and his wife Raechel, Alexis Brice, Ashley Brice and Meagan Wadsley and great-grand daughter Austin Brice; his brother David L. Brice and numerous nieces and nephews. In lieu of flowers, donations can be made to the C.E. Byrd Alumni Association or TAF Tiger Athletic Fund.
