In Loving Memory

Madam CJ Walker was born Sarah Breedlove on a cotton plantation in Delta Louisiana, her parents, Owen and MInerva, were recently freed slaves. She was the fifth child to be born and  the first free born child. Her family had moved and she later became of slave but at the age of 14 she escaped from her working environment. At a young age she married a man named Moses and after he passed away she later gave birth to a child, A'lelia Walker. Madam had suffered scalp ailment and it resulted in hair loss. After Madam had lost her hair she had decided to create hair care products for African Americans. In order to sell her products, Madam traveled all across the country giving demonstrations. Eventually she had established Madam C.J. Walker Laboratories to make her products and train beauticians. This business led her to become the first African American woman self made millionaire. To add on to her accomplishments, Madam donated the largest amount of money to the construction of an Indianapolis YMCA by an African American. In 1919, Madam died of hypertension at the age of 51.
