October 30, 2016Manuel Cruz Vásquez, loving husband, father and grandfather went to be with his savior Jesus Christ on October 30, 2016. The son of Lorenzo Vásquez and Florinda Cruz Vásquez, Manuel was born on July 26, 1926 in Martinez, Texas. At age 7, Manuel's mother passed away and his father, unable to work, left Manuel to provide for him and his younger brother. As a shoe shine boy he provided income for the 3 of them. Manuel entered the U.S. Navy at age 18 and toured the South Pacific on the USS Clarion, a supply and landing ship during WWII. After the war, Manuel returned to San Antonio and thereupon met his future wife, Anita Garcia. They were married on October 12, 1952 and their marriage was blessed for 64 years. Manuel loved his acoustic guitar and was blessed with a beautiful tenor voice. An avid reader and seeker of knowledge, Manuel could daily be found reading many books on diverse topics. Manuel is survived by his wife Anita, daughters Maria Zapata, Teresa Vásquez-Romero (Mauricio), Carmen Burns (Brian) and Ana Lucia, numerous grandchildren, nieces and nephews. Visitation will begin Monday at 5:00 P.M. in The Angelus Chapel with a Rosary to be recited at 7:00 P.M. Funeral Mass will be offered Tuesday at 9:00 A.M. at Immaculate Heart of Mary Catholic Church. Interment will follow at Fort Sam Houston National Cemetery with military honors.Arrangements:
