Manuel John Fernandes, a long time resident of Hinsdale NH, 96, passed away on Sunday December 4, 2016. He was born on March 13, 1920 to Joseph and Virginia (DeCastro) Fernandes and was raised in Lowell MA. Manuel, aka Mickey, was a father, husband, teacher, hunter, fisherman, mentor and friend. He was also quite a joker and rather thrifty. There was a place for everything and everything in its place. Manuel was a United States Marine Veteran and Staff Sargent who fought in
World War II in Saipan. He also worked at First National/FINAST as a produce manager for numerous years. Once he retired from there he had numerous maintenance jobs around Brattleboro VT up into late eighties. His hobbies included meticulous attention to his yard and garden, word searches, yard sales, playing games such as Yahtzee and Cribbage, watching sports - especially the NE teams, and enjoying a sweet treat.Manuel is survived by his wife of 52 years Gloria Fernandes of Hinsdale NH, their son; Mark John Fernandes and his partner Bill Slattery of Bethel Maine; daughter Linda Smith and her husband Don Smith of Vail Arizona; and grandchildren Stephen Perlowski and his fiancee Kathy Dunham Bellevance of Enfield NH, Jennifer Gardner and her husband Jason Gardner of Chesterfield NH as well as his great granddaughters that continued to keep him young, Sienna Mae Gardner and Coral Marie Gardner of Chesterfield NH. In addition, he leaves behind his children from his first marriage to Mabel Dumontet; Mike Fernandes and his wife Donna Fernandes of Keene NH, and their children; Cheryl Fernandes and her son Jacob Castor of Swanzey NH, Angela and Raymond Scott and their daughter Haylee Scott of Hilsboro NH, and Matthew Fernandes of Swanzey NH. He also leaves his daughter Carol Perry and her husband Bob Perry of Keene NH and their daughter Ann Blake and grandchildren Stephanie and Cameron as well as their daughter Kim Perry and her children Heather & Rebecca Perry of St Albans VT; additionally daughter Marlene Brodeur and husband Dan from Hooksett NH."Winner, and still champion..."In lieu of flowers, donations can be sent in Mickey's name to Brattleboro Area Hospice, Non-Hospice Early Care 191 Canal Street, Brattleboro VT 05301. A celebration of his life will be hosted at a later date.
