Manuel R. Quintana1922 - 2017 Manuel was born on Nov. 12, 1922 in Chihuahua, Mexico to Francisca and Francisco Quintana. At home with family at his side, he was called to the lord on Jan. 25, 2017 passing away peacefully of natural causes. Manuel was 94 years old. Manuel attended Banning High School in Wilmington before enlisting in the US
Army where he proudly served during
WWII; he served in the European theater and Normandy D-Day landing. He attained the rank of Sgt. E-5 Shipmaster with the Harbor Craft unit. Manuel married his wife, Belen Gonzales, whom he would spend the next 74+ years. A true demonstration of love and companionship. They would have 3 children, Manuel, Frank and Rosemarie. Manuel worked at Coast Fisheries in Wilmington where he worked his way to a position in the mail room. He later worked for Star Kist Tuna, Terminal Island, where he had advanced to a position with the payroll dept. He later worked for Anchor Packing in Carson and Korody Colyer in Wilmington, where he retired from. He was in charge of shipping and receiving at both locations.Manuel had many skills and talents; he was a natural artist and craftsman. He, for a time, was into photography where he would set up his own dark room for film developing, later he was into CB radio, he was a Ham Operator with his CB handle name of "Golden Boy." He enjoyed playing golf for a number of years and of course was into exercise and fitness, right up to the end where on a daily basis would ride his stationary bike. Manuel was a proud member of the honor guard at
VFW Post 2967 Wilmington. Manuel and his wife, Belen were also proud members of the VFW Seniors Club in Wilmington. Manuel was preceded in death by his mother, Francisca and his father, Francisco at an early age; his stepfather, Ben Cabrera Sr. and his brother, Richard. He is survived by his wife, Belen; sons, Manuel Jr. (Gloria); Frank (Ramona) and daughter, Rosemarie; grandchildren, Manuel Ill, Shelley (David), Regina (Anthony), Rachel (Richard), Raymond (Mikki), Daniel and Leeza; 9 great grandchildren and 2 brothers, Efren and Ben Jr.Such a great and loving person that he was. He will forever be in our hearts and deeply missed by family and friends. A short period for visitation and viewing will be held on Monday, Feb. 6th, between 8:30 AM and 10:00 AM at Funeraria Del Angel Mortuary, 1640 N. Avalon Blvd. Wilmington. (A Funeral Mass will be held on Monday, Feb. 6th, 11:00 AM at St. Peter and Paul Catholic Church, 515 W. Opp St. Wilmington.
