Marcus Earl Barnett, beloved husband of Gay Davidson Barnett, passed away on Saturday, December 3, 2016. Marcus was born on November 21, 1933 in the community of Standing Pine in Leake County, Mississippi. Marcus graduated from the University of Southern Mississippi with a Bachelor's Degree in Education. He then served in the U.S.
Army where he was stationed in Germany for two years. He then served an additional four years in the U.S. Army Reserve. He taught school in Mississippi for three years before entering the insurance industry. Initially, he worked as a Field Agent for The Travelers Insurance Company, and then became an Independent Agent. He worked with Gentilly Insurance Agency, and later, with Insurance Underwriters, Limited, where he worked until his retirement in 2008. He is survived by his wife of 59 years, Gay Davidson Barnett, five children and 14 grandchildren. His children are Barry Marcus Barnett (Amanda) of Alexandria, Louisiana, Bryan Davidson Barnett (Lori) of Slidell, Louisiana, Thomas Hudson Barnett (Diane) of Metairie, Louisiana, Ann Barnett Newton (Randy) of Great Falls, Virginia, and Elizabeth Barnett Schroeder (Tim) of Hendersonville, Tennessee. His grandchildren are Katherine, Lee, Marcus and Lily (children of Barry and Amanda); Rebecca (daughter of Bryan and Lori); Tommy, Kelly, Danielle and Joseph (children of Tom and Diane); Sophia Stevenson (daughter of Ann and Adam Stevenson); Samuel Newton (son of Ann and Randy); and, George, Scott and Laura (children of Beth and Tim). He is also survived by his first cousin, Betty Barnett Mitchell of Hattiesburg, Mississippi as well as by numerous nieces and nephews. Marcus was preceded in death by his parents, Bryan and Irma Barnett of Carthage, Mississippi, and his sister, Josephine Barnett Lackey of Forest, Mississippi. Services will be held in the First United Methodist Church of Slidell, 433 Erlanger Street, Slidell, LA 70458, on Friday, December 9, 2016 at 12:30 p.m. Visitation will be held in the Sanctuary from 10:30 a.m. to 12:30 p.m., preceding the services.
