Margaret Harwick Herrell died peacefully on Monday, Oct. 24, 2016, at Charter House. She was born on Sept. 26, 1915, to Margaret Graham and Harry J. Harwick. She attended school in Rochester until high school. She then transferred to Laurel School in Shaker Heights, Ohio, where she made and maintained many friendships. Margaret attended Camp Kamaji for Girls in Cass Lake, Minn., for several summers and loved the experiences she had there. She attended Smith College in Northampton, Mass., for two years. During the summer after her sophomore year of college, she worked at Mayo Clinic library at which time she met Wallace E. Herrell, whom she married on Jan. 18, 1936. They lived in Rochester until 1953 when they moved to Lexington, Ky., with their family. They returned to Rochester in 1971 and she has lived here ever since. She was an avid golfer for 75 years as well as an avid bridge and poker player. She was an active volunteer for Planned Parenthood in Lexington and one of the many women who baked hundreds of fruitcakes at Christmas for the Calvary Episcopal Church in Rochester. These fruitcakes were sent all over the world. Her favorite relaxation was reading, especially mysteries. She is survived by her son, John H. Herrell (Roberta) of Rochester and La Quinta, Calif.; her daughter, Sarah C. Herrell of Eau Claire, Wis., and her sister, Mary Anne Sundberg of Seattle, Wash. She is also survived by eight grandchildren and 12 great-grandchildren. She was pre-deceased by her husband, Dr. Wallace E. Herrell; a son, Judge Stephen B. Herrell (Alice) of Portland, Ore., and her brother, William J. Harwick (Linda) of Rochester. She was a wonderful person and passed on to her descendants her strong values and kindness, manners, and belief that the Golden Rule was worth following. She will be missed but as she said, she lived a long and blessed life. There will be a memorial service at 10 a.m. Saturday, Oct. 29, at Charter House. Donations are suggested to Mayo Foundation or Calvary Episcopal Church in Rochester.
