Margaret (Peggy) Hatchell Austin Margaret Hatchell Austin passed away peacefully on Sunday, November 27, 2016 at her home on Hilton Head Island. She was preceded in death by her husband of 45 years, Benton McDonald (Mac) Austin, who died on May 18, 1990. Margaret was born on March 11, 1921 in Chester, South Carolina, and was a graduate of Winthrop College. After teaching high school in South Carolina and working for United Airlines in Washington, DC, she was married to Capt. Mac Austin in January, 1945. At that time, he was a member of OSS and the Jedburgh operations in France and in China. Following World War II, Margaret and Mac traveled extensively in Mac's military career, which included tours in Ft Benning GA, Ft Bragg NC, Tokyo Japan, Korea, London England, Carlisle PA, and Vietnam. Margaret and Mac retired to Hilton Head Island, South Carolina, in 1972. Margaret was active in Daughters of the America Revolution (DAR), serving in various leadership positions including State Regent for South Carolina. She was also active in American Red Cross, was a Charter Member of the Episcopal Daughters of the King (DOK), and served as a board member of Camp Kanuga, North Carolina. She was an avid bridge and golf player. She is survived by her sons John C. Austin of Hilton Head Island, SC, and Michael M. Austin of Omaha, NE, three grandchildren and four great-grandchildren. Margaret will be interred at St. Luke's Church on Saturday, December 10, at 1:30, followed by a Memorial Service at 2:00.
