Dr. Margaret W. LewisDr. Margaret Williams Lewis was born on August 12, 1932 in Jamestown, Florida to Reverend Morris J. Williams, Sr., and Mrs. Margaret E. Williams. She passed away on December 22, 2016, at the age of 84, and leaves behind her husband, Dr. Howard E. Lewis; sister, Mrs. Idella W. Cleveland (Hayward) of Winter Park, Florida; and a host of relatives and very special friends who meant so much.Dr. Lewis graduated high school with honors from Crooms Academy in Sanford, Florida before going on to earn a Bachelor of Science degree in Nursing (Summa Cum Laude) from Florida A&M University (FAMU), a Masters of Science degree in Nursing from Ohio State University, and a Doctor of Philosophy degree in Administration of Higher Education from Florida State University.Dr. Lewis received numerous distinctions for her contributions to FAMU and the nursing profession in the State of Florida. She was inducted into the Sigma Theta Tau Honorary Society (1960), the Kappa Delta Pi Honorary Society in Education (1978), and the FAMU School of Nursing Hall of Distinction (1990). She received the Outstanding Deans and Directors of the Year Award for the State of Florida from the Florida Nursing Students Association (1993), the Distinguished Alumni Award from the National Association for Equal Opportunity in Higher Education, the "One Hundred Outstanding FAMUANS of the Century" Award, the Outstanding Service to the University Award from the Leon County Alumni Association, and the Outstanding Alumni Award from both the Florida and National Alumni Associations. In 2002, she was honored at FAMU as one of the "Great Leaders of Today" by receiving the Academic Trailblazer Award. In 2007, Dr. Lewis had her name etched into FAMU history for perpetuity, as the School of Nursing was renamed in her honor.Dr. Margaret Lewis was predeceased by Reverend Morris J. Williams, Sr. (her father); Mrs. Margaret E. Williams (her Mother); her brothers, Mr. Morris J. Williams, Jr., Mr. Edward M. Williams, Sr., and Mr.Marshall Williams, Sr.; and by her sisters, Mrs. Bertha Williams Mims, Mrs. Cardelle W. Perry, Mrs. Mattye L. Cherry, and Mrs. Edythe B. Robinson.Funeral services will be 12:00 Noon, Tuesday, January 3, 2016 at Lee Hall Auditorium at Florida A&M University, with burial at Culley's Meadowwood Memorial Park, 700 Timberlane Road, Tallahassee, Florida. The Links, Incorporated memorial service will be 4 PM, Monday, January 2 followed by the Alpha Kappa Alpha Sorority, Inc. Ivy Beyond the Wall Service at 5:00 PM at Strong & Jones Chapel, 551 West Carolina Street.
