Lucille (Best) Dannewitz, a long time resident of Los Alamos, passed away in her home in Sombrillo Nursing Home on Dec. 21, 2012, with her husband by her side. She was the daughter of Harry David Best and Ida Bell (Whitsitt) Best, and was born on Sept. 1, 1929, in Decatur, Ill. This was a remarkable day in the life of Margie and Bob Dannewitz, because that was the day they met. Bob's mother assisted at Margie's birth, and Bob came along, playing with Margie's older sister downstairs. Shortly after Margie's birth, she was brought down and introduced to Bob. Margie and Bob grew up in the same neighborhood, and they were friends all of Margie's life. That childhood friendship blossomed into romance, and Margie married Robert Len Dannewitz on June 26, 1948, in Decatur. In 1953 her life changed when her husband accepted employment with LASL, sight unseen. They and their 1 year-old daughter, Nancy, arrived in Los Alamos in April of 1953. Their son, Robert, was born in Los Alamos in 1956. Their pastor in Decatur had found out that there was a newly formed mission Lutheran Church which was meeting at the "Girl Scout Little House" and he wrote a letter of transfer to that congregation for Margie and Bob. They have been active members ever since. Her joy was in genealogy, and she was a charter member of the Los Alamos Genealogy Club when they formed. Her research led to information allowing her to become a member of the D.A.R., and she was active in that organization until health took its toll. Margie volunteered at the Los Alamos Medical Center and at her children's schools. When her son's Cub Scout troop needed a leader, she stepped up and took the job. She was an accomplished seamstress, was very creative and was always creating beautiful things with her hands. She loved traveling, photography, (she had worked making enlargements in a photography plant while she lived in Decatur), cooking, reading, and just living life to its fullest. She and Bob traveled to Alaska one summer, and when their grandson Bobby was 8, they took a trip all over the country, traveling all summer. Margie was a person of uncommon good sense and practicality. She had a wonderful sense of humor and a contagious laugh. She will be remember and missed for these qualities. Her parents preceded her in death. She is survived by her husband of 64 years; daughter Nancy L. Weidner (Frank), of Cedar Creek, TX; son Robert J. Dannewitz (Neomi) of Ft. Worth, TX; and her adopted grandson Robert J. L. Dannewitz, of Albuquerque; 2 sisters: Carmen R. Rucker of Danville, Ill., and Judith A. Wilkerson, of Norfolk, Va.; and 6 grandchildren and 6 great-grandchildren. A Memorial Service celebrating Margie's life will be held at 11 a.m. on Jan. 18 at Bethlehem Evangelical Lutheran Church, 2390 North Road in Los Alamos.
