Marguerite Hartman Rucker was born on February 12, 1926 in Lake Charles, LA, the only child of Curtis E. and Zelia C. Hartman. Following graduation from Sacred Heart High School where she finished second in her class, Dillard University accepted her in its newly formed division of nursing. She received a BSN degree from Dillard University in 1948 and was immediately hired by Flint Goodridge Hospital in New Orleans. In 1952, Marguerite enrolled in the Masters Degree Program at Case Western Reserve University, located in Cleveland, Ohio after receiving a Rockefeller Scholarship. On June 9, 1951, Marguerite married William "Billy" Rucker at St. Edmunds Church in Chicago, Illinois. Two daughters came from this union. Dillard University hired Marguerite in 1952, and remained there for almost forty years. She also served as a consultant for the U.S. Military. This required her to go to a few Naval Stations and give opinions and recommendations for improving their health standards. Among her professional affiliations were Dupon and others. Marguerites social membership include, the Alpha Phi Alpha Sorority, the Girl Friends, Inc., and the LNC's. Marguerite is survived by her daughters, Janet and Carol (Joseph); her husband, William "Billy" Rucker; her grandchildren, Elizabeth and William; her sister-in-law, Mamie Rucker Bell; and numerous cousin in Lake Charles, LA. A Requiem Mass will be held on Friday, November 25, 2016 at St. Luke's Episcopal Church, 1222 North Dorgenois St., New Orleans, LA, at 11:00am. Visitation at 10:00am. Family, former students and friends are invited to attend. The Rev. Edward Thompson will be officiating the celebration. Burial will follow at St. George Cemetery.
