Maria Amelia Lopez, 81, a resident of Anchorage, Alaska, and previously of Los Alamos and Española, passed on Tuesday, October 11, 2016. The family, friends and loved ones of Amelia Lopez celebrate her life, born on February 28, 1935 in Rio Arriba, to the late Felix and Madalegna Griego. Amelia was the proud mother to family of 10 children, 15 grandchildren and 9 great grand-children. Amelia always loved Northern New Mexico and the Los Alamos, and Española areas where she lived the majority of her life. Amelia lived in Alaska for the later years of her life near her son and his family. Preceding her in death were her husband of 54 years, Merced Lopez, sons Fidel and Johnny and her siblings Benjamin, Herminio, Elisa, Carmen and Antonio. Amelia is survived by children, Lorenzita of Española, Manuel and wife Jane of Alaska, Urban of Taos, Magdalena of Albuquerque, Jacque of Española; Yolanda and Helene of Santa Fe and Ronny of Tierra Azul. Siblings surviving Amelia are Odora Jaramillo, Higinia Jean Martinez, Joe Griego, and Phyllis Trujillo. She held a special place in her heart for Sterling Lopez and Little Ronny, Maria Maestas and Sonja Griego, Magdalena and Jacque Lopez. Special people in Amelia's life include her caregiver, Diane Garcia of Espanola, Mary Lou, Lalo, Angela and Richard of the Wesleyan House in Anchorage. Through her physical decline she remained spiritually vigorous. She was content in her last year's attending bible study and social groups, art and game events. Amelia spoke often of her beloved family and friends and missed the red clay and mountains of New Mexico. She enjoyed making new friends and always had family stories to share with others. Her husband Merced adored her and often said there was nothing more special than holding her hand. They are together again. Funeral service will be on Friday, November 25th at 3:00 p.m. in the Sangre de Cristo Chapel of DeVargas Funeral Home & Crematory. Burial will be held on November 26th at 10:00 a.m. at Guaje Pines Cemetery in Los Alamos.
