Markell Lawson, 22, of Hawkinsville, Georgia, passed on December 13, 2020. Markell was born on October 02, 1998. After graduating from Hawkinsville High School in 2017, he enlisted in the Coast Guard and served on the U.S.S. Whitebush stationed in Astoria, Oregon. He began his career as a mechanic keeping the engines running. While enlisted he was awarded the National Defense Service Medal. Upon the end of his enlistment, he moved with his wife, Irene, back to Bakersfield. They settled in East Bakersfield and he continued his career repairing buses, cement equipment, fire trucks, and more, finally retiring as a Bakersfield City Fleet Supervisor in 2005.
Markell was a jack of all trades and excellent DIY-er - from simple home repairs to major projects, including woodworking. He taught his daughter the basics of car maintenance and home repair. His projects included building custom bedroom furniture, bookcases, kitchen cabinets, and garage cabinets; building a patio, pouring cement, re-tiling showers, and installing siding on the house. He worked from sunup to sundown and we affectionately called him \"the energizer bunny.\"
He was known by friends and neighbors as the \"go to\" for questions and advice on home and auto repairs. He was happy to share his knowledge, loan a tool, and lend a helping hand. He not only kept his house in tip top shape but also kept his mother-in-law\'s house going and then his daughter\'s house.
He was loved and is missed by his mother, Irene; his sister Deena and his brother, Brian; and his son, Lucas.
