Heiland, Jr., Martin Byron Martin Byron Heiland, Jr., 86, of Tempe, passed away on June 4, 2017. Known by all as "Marty", he was born on February 27, 1931, in Red Lion, Pennsylvania, to Reverend Martin Byron and Sallie Rebecca (Diehl) Heiland, Sr. Marty moved to Arizona in 1955 after honorably serving in the U.S. Army from 1952 through 1955. He loved Arizona for its outdoor sports, vast open spaces, and diverse scenery. Every chance he could, until just a few years ago, he would camp, hunt, and fish with friends and family. Among his career experiences, Marty was manager of the Central Phoenix location of Bob's Big Boy, owner of Arizona Appliance Service, and Director of Maintenance for the Peoria Unified School District. He loved a good joke, appreciated firm handshakes, could fix anything, and always had a good time with family and friends. His calm, loving spirit, his pride and inner strength, and his always-supportive nature will be missed by all. Marty is survived by his wife of 37 years, Patsy Jean (Zelinka) Heiland, daughter Marlou Heiland and her partner Patrice Manning (Gilbert, AZ), daughter Marsha Heiland (Hampton, NH), step-daughter Robin Zelinka (Exeter, NH), and step-son, Al Zelinka and his wife Anna Pehoushek (Orange, CA). Known as "Grampy", Marty is also survived by his grandchildren: Robby Hamblet (Seattle, WA), Kathryn Hamblet (Portsmouth, NH), Sally Hamblet (New York, NY), William Hamblet (Hampton, NH), and John Zelinka (Orange, CA). He also is survived by innumerable other beloved family members in Pennsylvania, New Jersey, Arizona, and California. A private celebration of life will be planned for late Summer or early Fall. He will be buried at Heiland View Cemetery in Red Lion, Pennsylvania. In lieu of flowers, please consider donating to via 1-602-530-6900 or
