May 03, 1920 - May 15, 2014

This obituary is administered by:
KINSTON - Martin Louis Camnitz passed away at home on May 15, 2014, after a long illness. He was born on May 3, 1920, to Esther and Edward Camnitz in Hampton, Virginia. After marrying the love of his life, Naomi Laskavy, in 1942, he enlisted in the army and served in World War II in the 12th Armored Infantry as a Staff Sergeant. He landed in France and fought across Europe into Germany, resulting in several decorations. During his service, the platoon which he led liberated one of the larger concentration camps. This experience deepened his dedication to his Jewish heritage. After moving to Kinston with his family in 1953, Martin worked for Hampton Industries, which at its height had 2200 employees. He retired as Executive Vice President at the age of 70. He was a charter member of the Lenoir County Manufacturer's Association, was president of the Chamber of Commerce, and board member of the Committee of 100. He was recognized nationally for his contributions to the apparel industry. Martin was a contributor to numerous charities. Even at the age of 92, he wrote an editorial piece in support of public education, which was published in the Kinston Free Press. Martin Camnitz was known for his ability to get along with everyone, affording him many friends who would all attest to his wonderful wit and sense of humor. His own experiences enabled him to empathize with people from all walks of life. He didn't have an ounce of prejudice, except against ignorance. In addition to his wife, Naomi, he is survived by son Dr. Paul Camnitz and wife Jill of Greenville, NC; son Marc Camnitz and wife Linda of Wilmington, NC; daughter Laura Brody and husband David of Kinston, NC; and six grandchildren, Reuben Brody, Matthew Brody, Jennifer Brody, Dr. Will Camnitz, Kate Camnitz, and Todd Camnitz. He is also survived by brother, Victor Camnitz, and sister Toba Neer. The family wishes to thank those who took such good care of Martin during his illness: Felicia and Clarence Williams, Derrick Wilson, Donna Willoughby, and Junior. On Sunday, May 18 at 2 PM, all friends of Martin and his family are invited to join in remembrance of him at the home of Laura and David Brody, 1200 Sweetbriar Circle, Kinston.
