NEW BERN | Martin (Marty) Luther Morgan, Jr. died in New Bern, North Carolina on November 3, 2016 at the age of eighty-eight.He is survived by his wife of 61 years, Faith Brooks Morgan; his children Brenda Briggs (Stephen) of Rome, GA, Neva Cashion (Timothy) of Washington, NC, and Martin Morgan, III, of New Bern; grandchildren Morgan De Kleine (Randall) of Goshen, IN, Meredith Russell (Daniel) of Chattanooga, TN, Brooke Flesher (Patrick) of Irvine, CA, Nola Cashion of Washington, NC, Madeline Briggs of Rome, GA, and one great-grandchild, Levi Russell of Chattanooga, TN. He was preceded in death by his parents, Martin and Nola Morgan.Mr. Morgan was born on April 18, 1928, in Oakboro, NC. He graduated from Clemson University in 1952 with a degree in agronomy and was an ardent and lifelong Tigers fan. He served in the US Army during the occupation of Japan. He married Faith Brooks in 1955. He was a supervisor for Craven, Carteret, and Pamlico Counties with the USDA Farmer's Home Administration when he retired in 1986; he always had a soft heart for the farmers he worked with. He enjoyed serving his church over the years as a lay leader, treasurer, Sunday school teacher, and usher, and was a member of Temple Baptist Church at the time of his death.He enjoyed spending time with his family above all other pursuits, encouraging them in their various endeavors. He also enjoyed a good game of golf, the family dogs, and vacations at Long Beach. Mr. Morgan had a keen wit and a way with words; he also enjoyed debating an interesting issue.Visitation will be at 10 a.m. on Saturday, November 5, at Cotten Funeral Home in New Bern, NC. His funeral service will follow at 11 a.m. with the Reverend Maurice Phelps officiating. In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to Temple Baptist Church, 1500 Kingdom Way, New Bern, NC, 28560.Arrangements are by Cotten Funeral Home & Crematory.
