YORK Marvin W. Simkins, 95, of Country Meadows in York, died Friday, September 12, 2014, at the York Hospital. He was the loving husband of Beatrice (Flait) Simkins with whom he shared over 68 years of marriage. A memorial service will be held at 11 a.m. Wednesday, September 17, 2014 at Temple Beth Israel, 2090 Hollywood Drive, York. Barry Shapiro will be officiating. The Geiple Funeral Home, Inc., 53 Main St., Glen Rock, is assisting with the arrangements. Marvin was born on December 30, 1918, in Philadelphia. He was the son of the late Daniel Simkins, M.D. and Haddie (Valenchick) Simkins. He attended South Philadelphia High School and graduated as a Textile Engineer from the Philadelphia College of Textiles and Science. Marvin and his family moved to York in 1952 and for 35 years he was General Manager of Blue Bird Silk Manufacturing Company. He served in the United States Army Signal Corps as a Sergeant during the Second World War and was with the 5th Army in North Africa and Italy. Marvin was an active member of Ohev Sholom Congregation and the Jewish Community Center. He served as past president for both organizations and identified as a Jew to his very core. He also served a term as president of United Way of York. At the age of 90, he was inducted into the exclusive MENSA International Organization. He penned several articles that were published in the MENSA monthly publication. Last year, Marvin completed his autobiography titled, "The Best 90 (Plus) Years of My Life." Amazon.com. Throughout his life, he was an avid athlete, photographer and investor. His sense of humor, kindness and fair play was unparalleled. Besides his wife Beatrice, he is survived by his daughter, Barbara J. Simkins of Ridgefield, Conn.; and his sister, Joyce Fishbein of Elkins Park. He was preceded in death by his son, Richard D. Simkins, and his sister, Ellie Staples. In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to Ohev Sholom Congregation, 2090 Hollywood Drive, York, PA 17403; or Jewish Family Services of York.
