SmithSandy, OregonMary Carol Smith of Sandy, Oregon (formerly of Adel and Urbandale, Iowa) died in Portland after a long illness on August 15, 2017. Miss Smith's cremains will be interred at the Resthaven Cemetery of West Des Moines at 10:00 a.m. Friday, September 1, 2017. Carol was born on January 12, 1953 in Des Moines, Iowa, the daughter of Dr. C.L. Smith, former Drake University faculty member, and Mary Atwater Smith. A Drake Graduate, Carol began her 30-year career as a second grade teacher at Dexfield Community High School (later part of West Central Elementary) at Redfield, Iowa. She was a popular and inspirational teacher, often purchasing school supplies and making secret gifts to her needy students from her own pocket. In addition to her teaching career, Carol was a renowned costume designer for the Des Moines theatre community, creating memorable pieces for such venues as The Drama Workshop, Ingersoll Dinner Theatre and the Salisbury House Renaissance Faire. Carol was an avid collector of art and fine furnishings. She enjoyed old films, time with friends and participating in her local Questors chapter. Her lifelong passion was for animals, her many pets and a fondness for wildlife. Carol brought great joy to her thousands of students, her fellow colleagues and countless friends.Carol is predeceased by her parents. She is survived by her only brother, Charles (Sharon) Smith II of Silverton, Oregon, two nieces and a nephew. In lieu of flowers, the family requests that donations be made to the Des Moines Chapter of the Animal Rescue League of Iowa.
