Mary Elizabeth Horton, age 88, passed away on Thursday, December 1, 2016 at Ellis Hospital. Mary was born on August 15, 1928 in Troy, NY to the late Lee and Mary Winifred DeWire. Mary had her First Holy Communion, June, 1940 and graduated from Watervliet High School in 1946. On February 17, 1952, Mary E. DeWire and Edward S. Horton were united in marriage. They had a daughter, Beverly, and a son, James. Throughout Mary's life, there was seldom a dull moment in any conversation. She always spoke her mind and knew no stranger. With her gift of gab, Mary often left people with a smile on their face or a look of shock - "she said that!?" Mary was an avid volunteer. Her first venture was in the East Glenville Fire Dept. Ladies Auxiliary in 1953. Mary served for over sixty years and is remembered with great fondness among the ranks. Mary was an active greeter and member of the Rosary Society at her beloved church, The Immaculate Conception. Mary also loved the VFW. She started with the Glenville Post 4660 and later Post 358 in Ballston Spa after Post 4660 dissolved. She spent many hours at the Scotia library and could also be found at the polling places in Glenville during election season. Mary was predeceased by her son, James; parents, Lee and Winfred DeWire; brother, Lee DeWire, Jr., and her husband, Edward Horton. Mary Elizabeth DeWire Horton is lovingly remembered by many; daughter, Beverly Horton Martinson; grandchildren, Charley (Carrie) Martinson, Jason (Crystal) Martinson, Elizabeth Martinson and Lisa Martinson and eight great-grandchildren. Her nieces, nephews and several neighbor friends also hold special memories of 'Aunt Mary'. Relatives and friends are invited and may call on Friday, December 16, 2016 from 5 p.m. to 7 p.m. at Townley and Wheeler Funeral Home, 21 Midline Road, Ballston Lake, NY. A funeral service will be held on Saturday, December 17, 2016 at 11 a.m. at the funeral home. Father Jerome Gingras will preside. A reception will follow at the East Glenville Fire Dept., 433 Saratoga Road. Interment will be at a later date at the Gerald BH Solomon Saratoga National Cemetery, 200 Duell Rd., Schuylerville, NY.
