Mary Elizabeth Richards, age 89, passed away peacefully on June 5, 2025, surrounded by loved ones in her home in Indianapolis, Indiana. Born on August 3, 1935, in Des Moines, Iowa, Mary was a beloved mother, grandmother, sister, and friend. She had a deep love for books, baking, and community service, and she was known for her warm smile and unwavering kindness. Mary spent most of her life working as a librarian and volunteering at the local food pantry. Her love of learning and giving spirit touched everyone she met. Mary is survived by her children: Thomas Richards, Linda Hargrove, and Robert Richards; her sister Joan McIntyreof Minneapolis, MN; and her grandchildren: Brandon Leier, Stephanie Hargrove, Marcus Richards, and Ella Nguyen. She also leaves behind her cherished cat, Whiskers, and a large extended family of cousins, nieces, nephews, and dear friends. She was preceded in death by her husband of 52 years, Edward Richards, her brother Charles Benson, and her parents, Frank and Eleanor Benson. A celebration of Mary’s life will be held at St. Luke’s Lutheran Church in Indianapolis on Saturday, June 14, at 11 a.m., with a reception to follow. In lieu of flowers, the family requests donations be made to the Indianapolis Public Library Foundation or the local Meals on Wheels program. Mary’s warmth, laughter, and legacy of compassion will live on in all who knew her.
