She graduated from Caesar Rodney Senior High School in 1964, received a nursing degree from Church Home and Hospital School of Nursing in 1967, an Associates degree from Essex Community College in 1974 and a BS degree in nursing from the University of Maryland School of Nursing in 1982.She worked as a nurse at Church Home and Hospital in Baltimore, MD for 32 years and another 9 years at Johns Hopkins Hospital in Baltimore until Mary Ellen's health forced her to retire in 2005. She enjoyed knitting and was an avid cat lover. For more than 50 years, she proudly exhibited her knitting and vegetable items at the Delaware State Fair.Mary Ellen was preceded in death by her parents: Horace E. Short, Sr and C. Elizabeth Hollingsworth Short.She is survived by her siblings: H. Edward Short, Jr. (Lucille) of Glasgow, DE, Thomas C. Short (Monica) of Dover, DE and Elizabeth A. Sperati (William) of Wilmington, DE. In addition, Mary Ellen is also survived by several nieces and nephews.
