HAMLET, N.C. — Mrs. Mary Smith Gainey, 98, of 120 Sycamore St., Hamlet, died Tuesday, Jan. 5, 2016 at FirstHealth Richmond Memorial Hospital.

She was born on Aug. 18, 1917 in Richmond County, daughter of Alexander "Sandy" Smith and Sallie S. Smith.

Mrs. Smith was a member of Springhill Wesleyan Church and previously worked in textiles.

She was preceded in death by her parents; her husband, Earl Nelson Gainey Sr.; sister, Alma Hodges; and brothers, Bryant, Carl, Boyd, Henry "Bud" and Marvin "Short" Smith.

Survivors include her daughters, Brenda Covington of the home and Loretta McCoy and husband Marshall "Mac" of Jacksonville, Florida; sons, William "Ike" Gainey and wife Barbara of Cape Coral, Florida and Earl Nelson Gainey Jr. and wife Ondra of Rocky Mount; 12 grandchildren; 15 great-grandchildren; and two great-great-grandchildren.

Visitation will be from 1 to 2 p.m. Saturday at Springhill Wesleyan Church with the funeral to begin at 2 p.m. with the Rev. Edwin Luther officiating. Burial will follow at Richmond County Memorial Park.
