BOONVILLE — Mary Eleanor Sprouse Hayes, 103 1/2, passed away on Tuesday, Jan. 12, 2016, at Hugh Chatham Memorial Hospital in Elkin. Mary was born on July 5, 1912, to the late Will and Fannie Wagoner Sprouse. She married William Kenney Hayes on July 5, 1930. They farmed together for 42 years until Kenney passed away of a heart attack on April 16, 1972. After her husband's death, she planted and tilled her garden and preserved the food by canning or freezing; also making jellies. She continued to manage the farm with help from a dear friend and neighbor, James Shore. Mary was the oldest member of Mitchell's Chapel United Methodist Church. She loved and support the church by crocheting nine afghans and donating them to the United Methodist Women for their fundraisers over the years. She also loved making fried chicken for bereaved families. Mary treated her family with love and provided each child and grandchild with an afghan and a quilt. While her daughters were growing up, she made all of their dresses and clothes for them and herself. Mary was preceded in death by her husband, Kenney; her parents, Will and Fannie; her brother, Thad Sprouse and his wife Hazel and their daughter, Peggy Boose; her daughter-in-law, Martha Hayes; three great-grandchildren, Austin Thomas, Savannah Thomas, and Emmerson Gordon. Survivors include three children and their families. Daughter: Helen Roseberry (late husband Jim of Yadkinville); Helen and Jim's children: James Roseberry and wife Joyce of Lone Hickory; Susan Rieser and husband Geoff of Lewisville; her daughters Allison and husband Ryan Gordan of Wichita Falls Texas; Sidney Cearley of Lewisville; and step-grandson Justin Whisenhunt and wife Kayla and son Gavin of Pensacola, Florida. Daughter: Carol Jackson and husband Henry of Lewisville; Carol and Henry's children: Joseph and wife Angie Jackson and son Lee of Wilimington, NC; Ellen Thomas and husband Jeff and sons: Jack and Max of Clemmons. Son: Ray Hayes of Rocksboro; Ken Hayes and wife Phyllis of Lexington; Granddaughter: Kennie Sledge and husband Nicholas of Lexington; great-grandchildren: Kelsey and Courtney; grandson Joe Hayes and wife Danielle Hayes of Lexington; great-grandchildren: Caige and Blake; also Logan Merritt; Daughter: Lynn Blakely of Raleigh; and daughter Gail; Daughter: Annette Hedrick and husband David of Lexington; daughters Carrie and husband John and children; Pam Long and husband Christian and children. Her funeral service will be held on Saturday, Jan. 16, 2016, at Mitchell's Chapel United Methodist Church at 2410 Center Road, Boonville, at 4 p.m. Visitation will be at the church from 3 to 4 p.m. She will be laid to rest beside her beloved husband of 42 years in the church cemetery. Services will be conducted by her pastor, the Rev. John Pillsbury. Assisting Pastor Pillsbury will be the Rev. Charles Turner and wife Connie (of Mocksville) who have been supportive to Mary over the years. Memorials may be made to Mitchell's Chapel United Methodist Church for their Cemetery Fund, 2410 Center Road, Boonville, NC 27011. The family appreciates the medical care and devotion given to her for many years by Dr. Alex Waite and Tabitha Cousart, GNP at Blue Ridge Medical Group in Yadkinville and the last week by Dr. Thomas Vybiral and the caring and compassionate staff of Hugh Chatham Memorial Hospital (third floor). Additionally, the devoted care given to her the last two years by her caregiver, Belinda Hinkle. Gentry Family Funeral Service of Yadkinville is serving the Hayes family.
