Mary Higgins Mary Louise Higgins, 71, a native of Thibodaux and resident of St. Thomas, Virgin Islands, died Thurs., July 12, 2012. A graveside service will be held at 11 am. on Sat., July 21, 2012, at Morning Star Baptist Church in Thibodaux. She is survived by three nieces, Clarice Marts of Thibodaux, Denise M. Ayrow and Germaine Marts of Orlando, Florida; one nephew, Sidney Marts Jr. of Orlando, Florida. She was preceded in death by her parents, Junius and Augustine Robertson Johnson Jr.; sister, Edith J. Marts; grandparents, George and Florida Robertson and Junius and Edith Dickerson Johnson Sr. Mary was born on Sep. 25, 1940, in Lafourche Parish. She graduated in 1958 from C.M. Washington High School in Thibodaux. In 1962, she earned a Bachelor of Science in English and Humanities from Southern University in Baton Rouge. She was an elementary teacher in Lafourche Parish. Mary moved to Los Angles, California in 1967, there she met and married her former husband Dennis Higgins. She earned psychology courses from University of California and psychology and English courses from California State University. She graduated from California Lutheran College with a Master of Science Degree in Counseling and Guidance. In 1986 she moved to St. Thomas, Virgin Islands. She was a retired English teacher, journalist from Los Angeles, California School District and a retired guidance counselor at Bertha C. Boschulte School in St. Thomas Virgin Islands, where she touched the lives of many students. Her passion was reading and writing articles for her school and community newspaper and traveling abroad. She was a member of Virgin Islands Association for Counseling and Development and Delta Sigma Theta Sorority, Inc. She relocated to Louisiana in June of 2012 and passed away with her beloved niece at her side.
