Beloved Mother, Grandmother, and Great Grandmother
Mary Stewart, 93, of New Canaan, Connecticut, passed on September 14, 2022 surrounded by her loving family. Mary was born on February 20, 1929 in Manhattan, New York, to George and Rosemary Carter. At a very early age, Mary took care of her 6 siblings after her father passed away from of a heart attack and this caring nature followed her through her long life.
Mary attended Yale University where she met and married John Richard Carter. After graduation she went on to work for Bell Atlantic as a communications specialist until she became a homemaker after her first child while her husband worked as CEO for AXA Equitable Insurance. Mary raised her children all while staying active in her church ministry at St. Aloysius Catholic Church. She sat as a member of the Board of Directors on a number of different charities and the Order of Malta held a special place in her heart. She would make a yearly trip to bring the sick, disabled, and poor on a pilgrimage to Lourdes, France to visit the Shrine of St. Bernadette. Her hobbies and interests included Christmas held at her house for the entire family, reading, and baking.
Mary is preceded in death by her late husband John Richard Carter, her brothers Robert Stewart and Delford Stewart, her sons Robert Stewart and George Stewart, daughter Jennifer Malta, and grandsons Daniel Stewart, Bryan Stewart, and granddaughter Christie Stewart. She is survived by her children Daniel Stewart, Bernadette Repetto, and Mary Dorado, grandchildren Matthew Stewart, Michael Stewart, Joshua Stewart, Mark Stewart, Brianna Stewart, and Ashley Stewart, and great grandchildren Hazel Neri, Nathaniel Stewart, Gabrielle Stewart, and Abigail Stewart. A private ceremony will be held September 21, 2022 at St. Aloysius Roman Catholic Church.
