SUMMITVILLE — Mary Jane Lepird, 95, of Summitville, Ind., and formerly of Ligonier, Ind., passed away on Wednesdsay, April 2, 2014, in Alexandria, Ind. She was born on May 21, 1918, in Brimfield, Ind., to Clarence and Clara (Frick) Svoboda. She was raised by her mother and stepfather, Arthur and Clara Couts. She married Woodie Madden in November of 1936. He passed away in 1955. She then married Burl Lepird in 1960. He passed away in 2000. Mrs. Lepird is survived by two children, Carol (Ron) Werker of Greenback, Tenn., and Steve (Wendy) Lepird of Justin, Texas; two stepchildren, Jack Lepird of Goshen, Ind., and Shirley (Ron) Welborn of Summitville, Ind.; seven grandchildren; 14 great-grandchildren; and several nieces and nephews. She was preceded in death by two sisters, Joan DeTurk and Ethelmae Cunningham. Mary Jane graduated from Ligonier High School in 1936. At the start of
WWII, she moved to Long Beach, Calif., where she worked for the Army Air Force as a civilian employee. After the war, she was employed with Union Pacific Railroad. She moved back to Ligonier in 1959. She retired from American State Bank, then worked for Ulrey-Renner Funeral Home in Ligonier. She was very active in the Ligonier community and was a member of several clubs: Golden Girls Club, Happy Eight Card Club, she volunteered with the Food Bank and the Blood Bank, she was a charter member of the Ligonier Historical Society and served as a tour guide and she was a member of Ligonier United Methodist Church. Mary Jane moved to Summitville, Ind., in 2003, where she was a member of Summitville United Methodist Church and Madison County Church Women United, as well as having volunteered at Anderson Community Hospital. A funeral service in her honor will be Saturday April 5, 2014, at 2 p.m. at Yeager Funeral Home, 1589 Lincolnway South, Ligonier, Ind. Pastor Josh Johnson with Summitville United Methodist Church will officiate. Burial will be in Oak Park Cemetery. Friends may visit with the family for two hours prior to the funeral on Saturday.
