Mary Lou Masterson BurkeMary Lou Masterson Burke, 80, passed away on March 13, 2016 in John Day, Oregon. She was born on July 3, 1935 in Ellensburg, Washington, the daughter of Bat and Mary (McClure) Masterson. She grew up in the Teanaway Valley on the historic Masterson Ranch, homesteaded in 1880, by her great grandfather.After graduating from Cle Elum High School, Mary attended Central Washington College of Education and Washington State University majoring in English and education.On September 20, 1956 she married Pat Burke, in Lewiston, Idaho, and together they raised their family and ranched in the Swauk area until moving to Fox, Oregon in 2006.Mary lived and worked on her family's cattle ranches all of her life. She was a good hand and partner to Pat during nearly sixty years of marriage. Mary was well known in the cattle industry for her work at the local, State and National levels. She was president of the Kittitas County Cattle Women, the Kittitas County Cattlemen and the Washington State Cattlemen's Association. She also served on many committees of the National Cattlemen's Association and the Kittitas County boards of Conservation and Equalization. Mary was recognized as an expert on water rights, writing testimony on proposed water rules and helping many with their water and property rights. Mary is survived by her husband Pat Burke, of Fox, OR; sons Joe (Micki) Burke, of Fox, OR and James "Jed" Burke, of Ellensburg, WA; sister-in-law Kathleen Masterson, of Cle Elum, WA; nephews Bob (Patty) Burke and Tom (Carol) Burke of Ellensburg, WA; nieces Charlotte (the late Don) Frye, Paula (Wes) Crinklaw and Patti (Brad Tacher) Burke, all of Ellensburg, WA; niece Laura Megan Masterson, of Cle Elum, WA; numerous great nieces and nephews. She was preceded in death by her parents, brother Harry Masterson, and eldest son John Burke. Funeral Services will be held at the Ellensburg Presbyterian Church on Friday March 18th at 11:00 a.m. Interment will follow at the I.O.O.F. Cemetery and luncheon will be served in the church fellowship hall.In lieu of flowers, contributions may be made to the Presbyterian Church of Mt.
