BROWN, Mary Virginia (Andrew)formerly of Elmira, N.Y. passed away peacefully at the age of 105, on September 3, 2017 at the Jeanne Jugan Residence in Pawtucket, RI. Mary was born on September 11, 1911 in New York City, to Joseph and Agnes (Loan) Andrew. Her brothers and sisters-in-law, Frank and Marie Andrew, Robert and Ellen Andrew, and her sisters and brother-in-law, Margaret and Justin McCarthy, Elizabeth Ann Wright, and Agnes L. Andrew, all preceded her in death. Mary earned an RN at St. Joseph's Hospital School of Nursing in 1938 and a BS majoring in Public Health Nursing from Syracuse University in 1963. She served in the US Army Nurse Corp during WWII, and after the war returned to Elmira to work as a nurse at St. Joseph's Hospital until taking a position as a Public Health Nurse in 1958 at the Chemung County Public Health Dept. where she became a Supervising Public Health Nurse in 1968. Mary was devoted to her Faith and her family. She was a parishioner at St. Peter and Paul's Church for many years and then at Our Lady of Lourdes Church until she moved to Rhode Island in 2008. She was a member of the Mary and Elijah Community of the Secular Order of Discalced Carmelites in Elmira, and continued with the Order in Rhode Island. Mary was predeceased in 1985 by her loving husband Elmer E. (Brownie) Brown. She is survived by her daughter and her son-in-law, Marilyn and Thomas Slomba of Pawtucket, RI, grandchildren, Jeffrey Slomba, and Lisa and Kevin Blankespoor, four great-grandchildren, and many nieces and nephews. Her funeral Mass was celebrated in the Chapel at Jeanne Jugan Residence on September 16. Interment, with committal prayers, is scheduled for October 14 at 11 a.m. at St. Peter and Paul's Cemetery. In lieu of flowers, friends may make donations in Mary's memory to Catholic Relief Services, the Food Bank of the Southern Tier, or the Audubon Society. Walter J.
