Mattie Littlejohn, beloved wife, mother, and grandmother, passed away on May 17, 2023, in Spindale, North Carolina, at the age of 73. She was born on January 1, 1950, in Spindale, North Carolina, to Jesse and Emma Littlejohn.

Throughout her life, Mattie was known for her kind heart, infectious laughter, and unwavering faith. She graduated from Central High School in 1968 and went on to study nursing at Western Carolina University. Mattie was a dedicated nurse for over 40 years, serving at Rutherford Hospital and later at Hospice of Rutherford County.

Mattie was an active member of the Spindale community, volunteering at her church, and supporting local charities. She was a devoted mother to her three children. Mattie was also a proud grandmother to her four grandchildren, who adored her kindness and affection.

When she wasn't caring for others, Mattie enjoyed knitting, reading, and spending time with her family. Her home was always filled with love, laughter, and the smell of her famous chocolate chip cookies.

Mattie is survived by her children, Elmer Littlejohn, Grace Littlejohn, and Joe Littlejohn. Her grandchildren, Gussie, Lashana, Olivia, Liam, and Sophia. She is also survived by her brothers, James Littlejohn, and Billy Littlejohn, and her sisters, Mary Johnson, and Lillian Smith (and her husband Harold).

The world has lost a beautiful and kind-hearted soul. She will be deeply missed by her family and friends, who will remember her for her unwavering love and compassion for others.

The funeral service will be held at Thompson Funeral Home at 2 pm on May 25, 2023, and will be officiated by Reverend David Smith. In lieu of flowers, donations can be made to Hospice of Rutherford County or Thompson Funeral Home.
