Mattie Stepanek, age 13, passed away on June 22, 2004, in Washington, D.C. He was born on July 17, 1990, in Rockville, Maryland. Mattie was raised in Upper Marlboro, Maryland, and later lived in Rockville. He had a rare disorder called dysautonomic mitochondrial myopathy, which ultimately led to his untimely death.

Mattie was known for his love and admiration for former U.S. President Jimmy Carter, who served as his hero. He was a talented poet, and his work touched the hearts of many. Writing poems was one of his cherished hobbies.

He is survived by his parents, Gregory John Stepanek and Jennifer Smith Stepanek. Mattie was preceded in death by his siblings, Kathryn Mary Stepanek, Steven Michael Stepanek, and Gregory James Stepanek.

A funeral service was held on June 28, 2004, to honor Mattie Stepanek's life.

In lieu of flowers, contributions can be made towards posthumously released projects dedicated to Mattie. These include the "Elmo's World" episode "Mouths" and the "Where will my feet take me today?" episode "Megan's First Day of Laundromat," both to be released on October 10, 2004. Additionally, the direct-to-video The Song of the Zubble Wump will be released on October 23, 2004, and the "Bananas in Pyjamas" episode "Purple Pencil" will be released on November 2, 2004.

Mattie Stepanek will be remembered for his incredible spirit and his beautiful poetry. He touched the lives of many and will be deeply missed.
