Max GilesAbilene, TXMax Giles, 97, passed away Sunday morning, May 7, 2017. A memorial service will be held to honor his life, at 2:00PM, Friday, May 12, 2017 at Elliott-Hamil Funeral Home Chapel of Memories, 542 Hickory St., Abilene with Cliff Stewart and Janice Six officiating.Max was born on July 16, 1919 in Trent, TX to Marvin and Cynthia Lou Etta Giles. He grew up in the Trent, Merkel and Abilene area. He graduated from Abilene High School in 1936 and attended Hardin Simmons University for 2 years. Max was drafted into the United States Army and served with the 112th Calvary Division in the Southern Pacific. He served his country for 36 months. He was discharged from the service on December 11, 1944. He married Wanda Russell on December 28, 1944. She preceded him in death on February 26, 2013. They were married for 68 years.Max retired from the SBA where he was a loan adjuster for the Small Business Disaster Division for the United States Government.Max never met a stranger and always had an upbeat attitude and a great sense of humor.He was a member of the First Central Presbyterian Church. He delivered meal on wheels for years and volunteered at the Presbyterian Medical Care Mission.He was preceded in death by his parents; 5 brothers; and one sister. Survivors include Gayle Giles Waldrum and husband, Jim of Arlington TX; Cynthia Giles Waldrum and husband, Wayne of Abilene TX; Tip Giles and wife, Joy of Austin, TX; and Angela Giles Rice and husband, Joe of Nashville, TN; six grandchildren; six great-grandchildren; four great-great-grandchildren; and many nieces and nephews.Our family wants to thank all of the Angels at Wisteria Legacy Lane, that loved and cared for our Dad for many years. Thanks to Kindred Hospice. Thanks to Dr. Charles Fuller for caring for our parents for many years.
