A Life Well Lived

Maynard Steiner, 89, of Oradell, NJ, passed Wednesday, March 5, 2019. Born September 1, 1929 in Beaver Falls, NY, Maynard was the son of Harriet and Ernest and brother of Gerald.   Maynard enjoyed playing clarinet and saxophone in local high school bands, learned the valuable skill of house painting from his father, and was part of a large and tight knit German Swiss Steiner family in the Adirondak region of upstate NY.

Once he enlisted in the United States Air Force in 1949 as a member of the Air Force Band in Northern California, the nickname "Larry" stayed with him and is how he is known to many friends and family.  After the airforce, Larry enrolled at Syracuse University, where he had the good fortune of meeting Marion Stevenson while singing in the Chapel Choir. They were married in 1956 and moved to northern New Jersey, where he began a career in accounting- first with Price Waterhouse and then for 30 years as Financial Vice President of  the New York Philharmonic.

As a resident of Oradell for 51 years, Larry was active in the Lion’s Club and served on the Oradell Library Board, helping to oversee the renovation of the town’s historic library. He was a longstanding member of the Westwood United Methodist Church.  He loved good music, reading (especially a mystery!), antiquing on road trips with his Marion, Yankees baseball, and gardening. Post retirement he had time to turn his hobby into a passion: 19th century American Glass. He served as president of both the National Glass Club and Westchester Glass Club and board member of the Sandwich Glass Museum, all of which afforded Marion and him friendships and travel opportunities around the country and abroad. He researched, uncovered previously undocumented information, and published articles on glass factories in Brooklyn and Corning. Over the years he built a diverse collection of blown and cut glass tableware and oil lamps, which adorned their house.

In recent years health issues changed the pace of things, but Larry remained active accompanying Marion to many local activities including the Revolutionary War Roundtable discussions, the Waldwick and Westwood Bands' performances, and Westchester Glass Club meetings, often ending a day with dinner at Charlie Brown’s.

Larry is survived by his wife of 62 years, Marion; son, David (and Rena) Steiner of Green Cove Springs, Florida; daughter, Elizabeth (and Michael) Ong and three grandchildren, Gabriella Matthew and Sophia Ong of Kansas City, MO.
