Melburn Eugene "Smitty" SmithMelburn Eugene Smith, 89, of Springfield, passed away on Wednesday, May 24, 2017. Melburn, the son of Roscoe and Iola Smith of Joplin, MO was born on January 1, 1928. His parents and two brothers preceded him in death. Survivors include his sister Mrs. Mary Helen Ewing of Joplin, MO and his daughters Dawn Wood and husband, Alan of Springfield, MO, Dana Benesh and husband Jeff of Indianapolis, IN, and Christy Rice and husband Greg of Los Angeles, CA. Grandchildren are Cody Wood and wife Tammi, Tanner Wood and Samantha Wood, Claire Benesh and Elijah Embree. Melburn had one great-grandchild, Jakson Wood, who was the apple of his eyes. Melburn was a Naval veteran who served in World War II and Korea during his 23 year military career.After retiring from the military, he worked at Cox Medical Center North in maintenance for 22 years. After retiring, he enjoyed playing golf and spending time with his grandchildren. After cremation a Naval Military Service at sea will be held at a later date.
