Merle Wayne Obermeyer, 92, of Independence, MO died Sunday, December 4, 2016 at his home.Merle was born on September 7, 1924 in Hallam, NE to Herman and Galie (Lahm) Obermeyer. He moved to Independence in 1939, graduating from William Chrisman High School in 1942. Following graduation, he enlisted in the
United States Navy where he served as a Sonar Technician (Ping Jockey) in
WWII, traveling over 180,000 nautical miles before receiving an honorable discharge in 1946. Merle married Coeanna Mary Danner of Independence, MO on October 3, 1948. Together they raised two children, while spending their life farming, and co-owning and operating Obermeyer Greenhouse (28 years). He was a member of St. Luke's United Church of Christ in Independence, where he served many years on the church council, bowled in the church league, sang in the choir, and helped maintain the church facility. Merle enjoyed family trips to the Lake of the Ozarks, vacationing with his friends, fishing, golfing, and attending his grandkid's sporting activities. He was a Jack-of-all-trades, and spent much of his free time fixing things for anyone and everyone, and tinkering on his computer.Merle is survived by his beloved wife of 68 years; one son and daughter-in-law, David W. and Charlotte Obermeyer of Independence, MO; one daughter and son-in-law, Marsha and Dwayne Penny of Richmond, MO; one brother, Burdette Obermeyer of Kansas City, MO; two sisters, Lola Borchers and Audrey Puhr, both of Independence, MO; five grandchildren, Jared Obermeyer and his wife, Lisa, Erin Reese and her husband, Aaron, Joshua Obermeyer, Mary Penny and Emma Penny; and six great-grandchildren, Ashley Obermeyer, Ethan Obermeyer, Analiese Obermeyer, Mina Obermeyer, Ella Reese, and Allison Reese.Funeral services for Merle will be held on Saturday, December 10, 2016 at 3:00 p.m. at St. Luke's United Church of Christ in Independence. Visitation will be Friday, December 9, 2016 from 6:00 p.m. to 8:00 p.m. at the church. Burial will be in the New Salem Cemetery in Independence where military honors will be provided.
