After a valiant battle with cancer, we lost Mike on May 26, 2015. He was surrounded by his family and his many loving friends. He was truly loved and will be missed by all.
Mike grew up on Air Force bases until the end of elementary school. He then lived with his family for a short while in Terra Linda until they settled in Novato. He graduated from St Vincent’s High School in Petaluma where he made some of his life long friends. He graduated from Flight Safety Academy in Florida where he excelled in his quest to become a pilot just like his dad. He also graduated from the Fire Academy at Santa Rosa Jr College and worked as a volunteer fireman and eventually as a volunteer EMT. Mike was also a member of Mensa. He went on to work for 18 years at Fireman’s Fund becoming the Manager of Consumer Affairs in the General Counsel’s Office. His family would like to thank Sally Narey, Doug Martin and Robin Clover at Fireman’s Fund for all of their support to Mike during his illness.
Mike is survived by his love, wife Alison Hammond, and his other love, daughter Shelby Hammond. He also leaves his sister, Patty Hammond and her children, Jody and Jameson, his father-in-law and mother-in-law, Lyle and Susan Martin, his sister-in-law and brother-in-law, Zanna and Richard Zulch, their children, Matthew, Samantha and Cassie, his sisters-in-law, Cally and Kaya Martin and their son Trevor, and many cousins including Nancy Miller Hammond, who has always been there for us. He was predeceased by his loving parents, Rell and Tom Hammond. And among his many friends, he leaves his 2 best friends, Ron Roumas and Dave Hart.
Mike loved being with his friends, whether it was at home enjoying his Tiki Bar, camping, going to concerts, especially AC/DC, or his annual trip with Ali and Ron to the Tiki Oasis Convention. He also enjoyed doing the special effects for his friend Dave’s band and setting up beautiful fireworks around the Bay Area. He loved all of the pets he had through the years from dogs to reptiles. Mike had a real zest for life. But what he loved most was being with his wife and his daughter.
His family would like to thank his friends for the love they showed him, especially his last few days, and for all the love and help they gave to Alison and Shelby. We are deeply humbled. We would also like to thank Hospice of Marin and the nurses at San Rafael Kaiser for their loving care of Mike and his family.
Mike is up in Heaven with a bottle of Captain Morgan. His light shines on all of us. Smile brightly when you think of him.
