Michael J. SauerOverbrook, KS: Michael J. Sauer, 92, formerly of Mansfield, OH, died peacefully at Brookside Retirement Community in Overbrook, KS on Monday, August 28, 2017. Mike was the last of the "Fighting Sauer Brothers." Mike, Joe, and Albert Sauer boxed in the late 1930's and early 1940's in the Mansfield, OH area in the amateur rank. Michael J. Sauer was born on January 26, 1925 in Mansfield, OH to Michael N. and Elizabeth (Knapp) Sauer. He graduated from Mansfield High School, and went on to enlist in the United States Navy, serving as an MM3 on the U.S.S Indiana.He married Betty Mae (Sims) Sauer on December 10, 1942 in Norwalk, OH. She preceded him in death on December 7, 2015, after 73 years of marriage. He was also preceded in death by his youngest son, David A. Sauer; as well as his siblings, Joseph Sauer, Albert Sauer, and Elizabeth Bender.He is survived by his oldest son, Michael D. Sauer (Kathy Zima-Sauer) of Harveyville, KS; two grandsons, Michael L. Sauer (Kelly), and Matthew T. Sauer (Carrie); two great-grandchildren, Dillon and Molly Sauer; and a sister, Mary Ella Greenland. Michael will lie in state from 3:00 p.m. until 8:00 p.m. on Friday, September 8, 2017 at the Penwell-Gabel Southwest Chapel, 3700 SW Wanamaker Road, Topeka. The family will receive friends from 6:00 p.m. to 8:00 p.m. at the funeral home. A funeral ceremony will be held at 1:30 p.m. on Saturday, September 9, 2017 at Brookside Retirement Community, 702 W. 7th Street, Overbrook, KS 66524. Burial with military honors will follow at Pleasant Hill Cemetery, Berryton. Memorial contributions in his honor may be made to the Navy Safe Harbor Foundation,1619 King Street, Alexandria, VA 22314.
