Miriam T. (McGrane) MartinDes MoinesMiriam T. (McGrane) Martin, 89, died May 29, 2017 at Wesley Acres in Des Moines from complications of dementia. Mim was a beauty with a passionate heart and a dazzling smile that lit up any room. She cherished her family deeply. She held a deep and abiding faith and a passion for nature, especially for dogs and gardening.Mim was born on November 8, 1927 to Bert and Veronica (Rhody) McGrane, the first of five children. She attended St. John's and Holy Trinity grade schools and St. Joseph's Academy in Des Moines. Mim studied art at the University of Iowa before marrying John W. Martin and raising her family. She worked as a talented designer of arts and crafts at National Handcraft , then for twenty years as a registered nurse at Mercy Hospital in Des Moines. Her retirement years were filled with gardening, reading, walking her dogs, visiting grandchildren, watching her beloved college football, and volunteering at Holy Trinity Catholic Church and St. Mary's Family Center. Mim was preceded in death by her parents; sons, Bill and Joe; brothers, Mike McGrane and Bill McGrane. She is survived by her children and grandchildren, John (Trudy) Martin, Ben, Sam (Tonia), Hannah (Pete Randol), and Lizzie; Kathryn Dixon and Jessica Drais; and Dave Martin, David, Daniel, Kristin, and Kaitlin; her sister, Betsy (Chuck) Haberer ; and brother, Martin (Sandy) McGrane. The matriarch of her family, she was beloved by many cousins, nieces, and nephews, as well as wonderful friends and neighbors.A visitation will be held at Holy Trinity Catholic Church at 2926 Beaver Avenue, Des Moines on Friday, June 16th, 5-7:00 pm with a wake service from 7-8 pm. Funeral services will be held at the church on Saturday, June 17th at 10:00 am. Burial will follow at 2:00 at the St. Joseph Cemetery in Casey, IA. The family would like to express their deep appreciation to Mim's many friends and neighbors, as well as the dedicated staff and caretakers at Wesley Acres (Des Moines) for their compassionate care and support. In lieu of flowers, donations may be sent to Holy Trinity Catholic Church, the Greater Des Moines Botanical Garden, or Wesley Acres.
