Muriel "Nan" (Nelson) Brauer of Chicago died peacefully with family by her side on June 19, 2017 in Oshkosh, WI at the age of 93. She was a loving wife, mother and grandmother and will be dearly missed by all. Muriel is survived by her son Thomas (Kay) Brauer of Oshkosh, WI, daughter Marian Brauer of Cypress, CA, daughter-in-law Melanie Brauer of Chicago, and grandchildren Tricia and Lauren Brauer, Nathaniel Bunker, and Aven Brauer. She was preceded in death by her husband Jerald, son Christopher, and sister Marian. Muriel was born on January 15, 1924 in Keokuk, Iowa to Hubert and Alma Mae (Schivers) Nelson. She attended Carthage College where she met her future husband Rev. Dr. Jerald C. Brauer. Muriel and Jerald lived lives full of family, friends, travel and laughter. While Hyde Park was home for 66 years, "the farm" (and friends there) was a most special place for the family beginning in 1964. Dear friendships developed around the world, especially in England. Muriel was a faithful member of Augustana Lutheran Church while in Chicago and took pride in her volunteer work for the University of Chicago Service League and Oriental Institute where she contributed for over twenty-five years. Muriel's children remember her as a supportive mother who provided a role model for graciousness, tradition and caring. She was an avid pug-lover who enjoyed nothing more than spoiling her four-legged friends with Milk Bones and bites of Schwarz's steak. Her two pugs, Henry and Zorro, were her canine companions until the end and provided her with endless comfort and joy.Muriel's funeral and luncheon will be Saturday, July 1, at 11:00 at First English Lutheran Church, 1013 Minnesota Street, Oshkosh with visitation beginning at 10:00. All are welcome to attend and celebrate Muriel's life. Memorial donations may be made to Augustana Lutheran Church of Hyde Park, 5500 South Woodlawn Ave, Chicago, IL 60637 or online to PAWS Chicago. The family would like to thank dog walker Julie and crew as well as the staff at Bella Vista for their efforts and continued support for Muriel and Henry.
