Nancy Carol Begeny, a beloved teacher, mother and friend, passed away peacefully on January 15th at her home in Ellicott City. She was 82. She was born on December 10, 1934, in Beaver Falls, Pennsylvania, the daughter of Forrest Zahn and Willa Carter Zahn. She graduated from Beaver Falls High School in 1952 and went on to earn a Degree in Teaching from Westminster College in 1957. She taught first grade in Mercer, Pennsylvania, where she met her future husband, Donald J. Begeny. They moved to Montgomery County in 1959, and then to Howard County in 1975. Nancy taught math and first grade for twenty-five years at Northfield Elementary, where she touched the lives and minds of countless children. Nancy loved teaching more than anything in this world. It was her life's work. She was passionate about the arts. She loved painting, dance and music. She loved gardening. She loved her pets, especially Brandy, Adam and Shane. She loved the ocean. She enjoyed traveling the world, but was happiest at home, spending time with family and friends in Ellicott City. Nancy is survived by her three children, Mark (Donna) Begeny of McLean, Lynda (James) Manning of Westminster, and John Begeny of Alexandria; seven grandchildren, Katelin Manning, Christopher Manning, Hannah Manning, Luke Manning, Abby Manning, Cal Begeny and Jack Begeny; three sisters, Shirley (James) Eales of Wadsworth, Ohio, Barbara Moretti of Wrightsville Beach, North Carolina, and Jeanne Holland of Beaver Falls, Pennsylvania; four sisters-in-law, Helen Davidson, Barbara Travis, Joan (Melvin) Walker and Patricia Higham; as well as many nieces and nephews. A memorial service will be held Saturday, February 11th at 10:00 a.m. at St. John's Episcopal Church, 9120 Frederick Road, Ellicott City, Maryland, 21042.
