Nancy Griffin Herring StuartNancy Griffin Herring Stuart, 87, passed away on October 10, 2017 at Birch Gardens Assisted Living in Staunton. Nancy was born on April 26, 1930 in Annapolis, MD to the late Captain George Griffin Herring Jr., USN Retired, USNA Class of 1921 and Frieda Margaret Ball Herring of Astoria, Oregon. She graduated from Annapolis High School in 1946 and from Mary Washington College in 1950. She married Lt. Thomas R. Stuart USMC, USNA Class of 1951 on December 8, 1951 at the US Naval Academy Chapel. Nancy was a homemaker and enjoyed volunteer work in many of the places they lived. She was a member of Trinity Church Altar Guild in recent years.Nancy is preceded in death by her husband, Col. Thomas R. Stuart, USMC, Retired and her brother, Captain George Griffin Herring III, USN, Retired, USNA Class of 1957. She is survived by her sister, Jane Herring McMahon of Harrisonburg; her daughter, Anne Stuart Spencer and husband, Tim, of Staunton and her son, Jerome C. Stuart II and wife, Sandy of Carlisle, PA. In addition, Nancy is survived by five grandchildren, Callie Spencer Schultz (Jeremy) of Waynesville, N.C., Brandon Thomas Spencer (Rachel) of Richmond, Tyler Stuart Spencer of Mexico City, Mexico, Emilie Miquel Stuart of Shippensburg, PA and Ellie MacMillan Stuart of Carlisle, PA, and three great-grandchild, Levon Spencer Schultz , Wynn Stokes Schultz, and Ava Grace Spencer.A private service will be held at the US Naval Academy Columbarium at a future date.
