Nathan Shoemaker, 78, beloved husband, father, grandfather and friend, died November 26, 2011, after a brief illness.
Nathan was born on February 19, 1933 in Santa Barbara to Rexford and Dorothy Shoemaker, but grew up in Ojai, graduating from Nordhoff High School in 1951. He obtained a degree in Mathematics from San Francisco State University. For many years, Nathan worked at the Naval Civil Engineering Lab in Port Hueneme, where he used his keen mind to solve a variety of mathematical problems.
In his retirement, Nathan enjoyed traveling with his wife and family, breakfast and conversation with good friends, the occasional game of golf, the challenge of his daily crossword puzzles and hunting for bargains and treasures around county thrift stores.
Nathan is survived by his wife and constant companion of 36 years, Vi Shellabarger Shoemaker, brother Winfield (Elizabeth), nephew Matthew, nieces Laura and Jennifer, children Lynn (Art), Scott, Susan (Joe), Christopher (Thea), Brad and Caitlin, and his beautiful grandchildren Kara, Christopher, Maya, Sarah, Caitlin, Avela, Spencer and Skye. He will also be greatly missed by his stepfamily, Mona (Gordon), Tonie (Onno), step-grandchildren, Ian, Brendan, Alec and Mimi, as well as the gang from Alexander's and BG's.
