Ned Begay, a beloved member of the Grants, New Mexico community, passed away peacefully on May 25th, 2023, at the age of 73.
Born on January 1st, 1926, Ned was the eldest child of Navajo parents. He grew up in a traditional Navajo home and was taught the importance of living a life of harmony with nature and people.
Ned attended school in the nearby town of Gallup and went on to study at the University of New Mexico in Albuquerque, where he earned a degree in sociology. After graduation, he returned to his hometown of Grants and began working as a community organizer, fighting for the rights of the Navajo people.
Over the course of his career, Ned held numerous leadership positions in local organizations such as the Navajo Nation Government, the Grants School District, and the El Malpais National Monument. His tireless work to improve the lives of those around him earned him the respect and admiration of all who knew him.
Ned was also a devoted husband, father, and grandfather. He was married to his high school sweetheart, Mary, for over 50 years, and together they had three children and six grandchildren. They lived a simple life, spending weekends hiking in the El Malpais and picnicking by the Bluewater Lake.
Ned was a man of great integrity, known for his kindness, his wit, and his unwavering commitment to justice. His loss will be felt deeply by his family, his friends, and his community.
Ned is survived by his wife, Fiona, their child Ivoryella, and their grandchildren, Ava, Lily, Olivia, and Emma. He will be missed dearly by all who knew him.
