NEDO GIZZINedo passed away on October 14, 2017 at Crossroads Hospice after a long and courageous battle with lung cancer. His strong will to live, and love for his family, carried him through seven years of treatment, but his body grew tired and he sadly lost the fight at 84 years of age. He will be deeply missed by his wife of 54 years, Mary, son Peter (Arlene), daughter Lisa (Bruce), and grandchildren Amanda, Nicola, Angelina and Matthew. Nedo was born on August 10, 1933 in Cocullo, Italy. At 18 years old, he crossed the Atlantic on his own to build a life in Canada. Upon his arrival, Nedo began working at the Hollinger Mine in Timmins, Ontario, starting as a diamond drill helper and rising through the ranks to a shift boss. In 1960, Nedo met Mary on a dance floor, and they married in 1963 and moved to BC. Over the next decade, Nedo pursued a successful career in the diamond drilling industry before he was approached by BC Hydro to establish and head up their in-house drilling division doing feasible studies on dam sites. As the patriarch, Nedo enjoyed spending time with his family, and sharing his stories and advice. His greatest joy were his grandchildren who he loved to feed and spoil. He was exceptionally skilled on the barbecue, and no family function was complete without Grandpa's famous meatballs. Nedo enjoyed puttering in his garden, tending to his grapevines and fig trees. He had a passion for the stock market, and each morning could be found reading the financial pages of the newspaper. Nedo was a devoted 46-year member of the Vancouver East Lions Club, where he volunteered countless hours. He was also active with the Confratellanza Italo-Canadese for many years. While reminiscing, Nedo remarked his life in Canada far exceeded his expectations. We will remember him with love, respect and gratitude. The family acknowledges and thanks oncologist Dr Cheryl Ho of the BC Cancer Clinic, GP Dr K. Appleby of Burnaby, and palliative primary nurse Kristy, for their exceptional care of Nedo. We also appreciate the comfort and support provided by the extended staff of the BC Cancer Clinic, the Burnaby home-care nurses, the Burnaby Hospital Palliative Unit, and Crossroads Hospice. Funeral services will be held at the Ocean View chapel in Burnaby on Wednesday October 25, 2017 @ 12:00 PM.
