Nellie F. Schend1917 - 2016Nellie F. Schend, 99, of Kenosha, passed away peacefully surrounded by her loving family, Saturday, Oct. 29, 2016, at her residence.She was born on March 4, 1917, to the late Henry and Adelaide (Jacobs) Glerum in Kenosha. She was educated in Kenosha, graduated from Mary D. Bradford and from the Chicago School of Nursing.On June 13, 1942, she married Theodore J. Schend at St. George Catholic Church. He preceded her in death on March 24, 2001.Nellie worked as a RN at Mercy Hospital in Chicago for a year and a half and on Rock Island Southern Pacific Railroad for a year as a nurse stewardess.Nellie was a member of St. Elizabeth Catholic Church. She was a member of the Christian Mothers. Nellie had a very strong faith with God and her family was most important to her.Nellie volunteered at Woodstock Nursing Home for over 30 years and volunteered as a soup kitchen coordinator for over 30 years through St. George/St. Elizabeth Catholic Church. For over 50 years, she always sent hand written Christmas letters. Nellie was an avid camper, enjoyed traveling, playing cards, water aerobics, baking, sewing and knitting. She was a member of the Red Hat Society and was an avid Packer fan.Nellie is survived by her children Mary Beth (Carl) Drechsler of Kenosha, John T. (Mary) Schend of Hilton Head, SC, Ruth Ann (Mike Wilson) Schend of Kenosha and Paula J. (Brian) Mattson of Menomonee Falls, her eight grandchildren and her four great grandchildren and her sister Paulina Shanahan of Grenada Hills, Calif. She is also survived by many nieces and nephews.She is preceded in death by her son Joseph H. in 1950 and her two brothers Lawrence Glerum and Edwin Glerum.A Mass of Christian Burial for Nellie will be held on Wednesday, Nov. 2, at 9:30 a.m. at St. Elizabeth Catholic Church (4804 – 7th Ave.). Interment will follow at St. George Cemetery. Visitation will be held on Tuesday evening from 5 p.m. to 7 p.m. at the Bruch Funeral Home. On Wednesday the family asks friends and relatives to meet at the church at time of Mass.
