Newton V. BatesAGE: 90 • VinelandNewton V. Bates, age 90 of Vineland, was called home to heaven on Tuesday, October 3, 2017, surrounded by family at his bedside.He was born on January 24, 1927 in Waterbury, Conn. to the late Rev. and Mrs. Raymond J. Bates. Newton was a
WWII Veteran of the
U.S. Navy. After graduation from Colby College in Waterville, Maine, he started his retail career with the F.W. Woolworth Co. in various locations throughout the northeast. He went on to manage King's Dept. store in Portsmouth, NH and in 1969 transferred to King's in Vineland. Newton was a faithful member of the First Baptist Church of Vineland and recently at Central Baptist Church of Millville/Vineland. His passion was the love of the Lord, his family and friends and vacationing at his cabin on Great East Lake, N.H. and Lake Memphremagog in Newport, Vt. And Canada.In addition to his parents, Newton was predeceased in death by his first wife of 49 years, Shirley M. Bates, his son Richard G. Bates and grandson Richard G. Bates II.Newton is survived by wife Carolyn A. Bates of Vineland, sister Phyllis A. Sewell of Washington, brother Gordon S. Bates of Maine, daughter Brenda L. Dyer and husband William of IL., sons; Raymond J. Bates II and wife Ellen of Buena, William N. Bates of Maine, Donald E. Bates and wife Terry of MD, Kenneth G. Bates of IL. and John P. Bates and wife Yolanda of GA. He is also survived by 10 grandchildren and 13 great-grandchildren.A service of celebration will be held in honor of Newton on Saturday, Oct. 7th at 11:00 am at the Central Baptist Church, 9 N. 2nd St. Millville, NJ. with Rev. Louis Spyes officiating. Interment will follow at Siloam Cemetery, Vineland.
