Nobuo IwamotoMay 13, 1924 - Nov. 25, 2016SALT LAKE CITY-Our dear Nobuo Iwamoto passed away in the early hours of November 25, 2016, his 66th wedding anniversary. He and his family were fortunate to have spent a wonderful Thanksgiving together. Nobuo was born on May 13, 1924, in Ogden, UT to Shinji and Take Iwamoto. He had three siblings: brother Heed, and sisters Clara (Harry Seko) and Ruth (Kay Oka) who all preceded him in death. He married Yasuko Kato on November 25, 1950. They had a marriage of true love, devotion, partnership and dedication. Although his family loved being with him, he truly wanted to be with mom the most. Nobuo attended Ogden city schools and Weber Junior College. He graduated from the University of Utah with a BA Degree in Business in 1949. Nobuo Iwamoto's service to his country began when he enlisted into the Armed Forces in 1944, during World War II. While in the Army Reserves, he was recalled to active duty to serve during the Korean Conflict where he was a First Lt. and Commanding Officer - Counter Intelligence Unit. On November 2, 2011, he, along with other Japanese American Veterans, was honored in Washington, DC, with a Congressional Gold Medal for his service in the Military Intelligence Service during WWII. On November 3, 2015, at the Utah State Capitol, he received the Korean Peace Medal, presented to Utah Veterans by the Ambassador for the Republic of Korea.Nobuo retired after 34 years of service with the Salt Lake Federal Housing Administration where he was chief mortgage credit officer, chief underwriter and at the time of his retirement, deputy director. From 1978-1988 he served as vice president of Western Mortgage Corporation and United Savings Bank. He served on the National JACL Credit Union Board from 1973-1995 and was chairman of the board from 1981-1985. He also served as a board member and past president of the Associated Federal Credit Union.He was an active member of the Japanese Church of Christ where he served in a number of capacities, including elder and board of trustees member. He chaired and participated in many fundraising events. He loved his church and enjoyed fellowship with friends and family. Nobuo was a loving husband, father, grandfather, great-grandfather and friend. He is survived by his devoted wife, Yas; his children Gary (Pam) of Albuquerque, NM, and Jani (Steven Fukumitsu) of Salt Lake City; five grandchildren, Matthew (Mai), Traci, Julie (Chris Checchio), Nathan, Katie and Yuki (his four-legged grandchild); great-grandchildren Ian and Kai Iwamoto; and many nieces, nephews, grandnieces and grandnephews. He was an avid fan of the U of U basketball, football and gymnastics teams, and the Utah Jazz. He enjoyed time spent in the Nisei Bowling League and Happy Time Bowlers, and weekly golf outings with friends. He also enjoyed trips to Japan, China, the Caribbean, Alaska and Branson with friends and family. He cherished the time he spent in Hawaii, California, Cedar City for the Shakespeare Festival, and numerous family travels. He was extremely proud of his children, grandchildren and great-grandchildren. He loved them dearly. His face would especially light up at the sight of his grandchildren and great-grandchildren.A Celebration of Nobuo Iwamoto's Life will be held Saturday, Dec. 3, from 11:30 a.m.-2:30 p.m., at the Japanese Church of Christ, 268 W Japantown Street (100 So.), Salt Lake City. A private family service will be held with interment at Wasatch Lawn Memorial Park. We love you. We look up to you because you have led a life of honesty, integrity, hard work, selflessness and service. We always knew you were there for us. You made us feel safe and loved. You gave us the world. You will be with us forever.
