YORK Norbert Karl Konkel, 69, passed away Wednesday, September 3, 2014, at 8:55 p.m. at York Hospital after a lengthy battle with pancreatic cancer. He was the husband of Kay L. (Eveler) Konkel. Mr. and Mrs. Konkel were married for nearly 45 years, having been married at St. James Lutheran Church, Brogue, on September 27, 1969. Norbert was born on September 16, 1944, in Garnsee, Kreis Marienwerder, Westpreußen, Germany, the son of the late Karl Gustav Konkel and Rosa (Stelz) Konkel. In January 1945, while he was a small infant, the Konkel family had to flee their home in West Prussia in advance of the invading Soviet army. After being held in various Russian and Polish camps for displaced war refugees, they came to live on a farm at Bolkewehr bei Eilsum, Ostfriesland, Germany in April 1946. The family moved to Hannover, Germany in 1950, where Norbert entered school. The Konkel family emigrated to the United States in October 1956 and settled in Chambersburg, Pa. Norbert graduated from Chambersburg Area Senior High School in 1962, and Shippensburg State College in 1966. He later earned a Master's Degree. He began his teaching career at Weatherly Area Junior Senior High School in Carbon County, Pa. In 1968, he moved to York County and transferred to the newly built Dover Intermediate School, where he taught German and later an introductory language course for 8th graders. From 1979 until his retirement in 2002, he taught German at Dover Area High School. He was a member for 46 years of the Dover Area Intermediate School Poker Club. He was also a member of the Dover Fish and Game Association. Norbert and Kay enjoyed traveling to Germany, Costa Rica, California, Texas and Florida. In addition to his wife, he is survived by a son, Richard K. Konkel of York; brothers, Eckhard S. Konkel and wife Marcia of Santa Rosa, Calif., Wolfgang J. Konkel and wife Jean of Holland, Bucks County, Pa; brothers-in-law, Robert C. Eveler of Airville and Dan A. Eveler of Red Lion; sister-in-law, Amy M. Squire and husband George of West Chester, Pa.; mother-in-law, Olga Shaull Eveler of Felton; nieces and nephews, Melissa Konkel, Nancy A. Kennedy, Taylor N. Konkel, James R. Eveler, Amanda E. Eveler, Joseph A. Eveler, and Katie N. Meadows; as well as numerous cousins and relations in Germany. In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by his father-in-law, Clark E. Eveler and sister-in-law, Paulette E. Eveler. A Memorial Service will be held on Saturday, September 13, 2014 at St. James Evangelical Lutheran Church, 2335 Cramer Road, Brogue, PA 17309. Visitation will be at 1:00 p.m. and the service at 2:00 p.m. with the Rev. Edgar C. Reed officiating. Interment will be at the St. James Cemetery. In lieu of flowers, memorial donations may be made to St. James Lutheran Church, 2335 Cramer Road, Brogue, PA 17309.
