Norman "Jeff" HabenstreitNorman "Jeff" Habenstreit, age 92, passed peacefully on Thursday, June 29, 2017, at Capital Caring's Halquist Memorial Inpatient Center in Alexandria, VA. Norman was born on January 5, 1925, in New York City to Rudolf and Ester (nee Steckman) Hebenstreit. However, Norman celebrated his birthday on January 15, 1925, when his birth was recorded. Rudolf and Ester immigrated to the United States from the region known as Galicia in the Austro-Hungarian Empire in 1907 and 1911, respectively. Ester and Rudolf had five children: Murray, Nathan, Samuel, Norman and Pauline. Norman proudly served his country in
World War II from 1943-46, initially in the U.S. Naval Armed Guard as a gunner's mate and later on the USS Franklin D. Roosevelt as a seaman first class. His three brothers also served during WWII in the US Army/Air Corps. On September 3, 1955, Norman married Beverly Lillian Gorton, daughter of David and Jane (nee Kiel) Goldberg, in Yonkers, NY. Norman was known as Jeff to Beverly, her family and their friends. They happily strengthened their bond with the births of their children Linda, David and Douglas. In 1965, Norman "Jeff" and Beverly moved to Bergenfield, NJ, to raise their children. Norman was a member of the Bergenfield chapter of the
Veterans of Foreign Wars and served on the Bergen County Democratic Committee with his wife Beverly.Norman worked for the U.S. Postal Service as a civil servant at 90 Church Street in lower Manhattan for more than 30 years. During his career, he watched the construction of the Twin Towers and after his retirement he witnessed with deep sadness their destruction. After retiring from the U.S. Postal Service, Norman worked at Bergenfield High School for many years as a lunchroom monitor. In January 2010, after his wife Beverly passed on May 6, 2007, Norman sold their home in Bergenfield and moved to Deerfield Beach, FL, to be closer to his siblings Sam and Pauline and his nieces and nephews. Norman lived independently in Florida before becoming ill in early May and coming to Virginia to be cared for by his daughter, Linda. Norman lived a full and happy life. He was an energetic, dancing machine until his early 90s. Norman was a strong and brave man who faced death without fear. He leaves behind his grieving daughter Linda of Springfield, VA, and her husband Neal Schiff, formerly of Allentown, PA, his son David of Dumont, NJ, his son Douglas of Paramus, NJ, his sister Pauline Rosenblatt of Deerfield Beach, FL, 12 nieces and nephews, fourteen great-nieces and nephews, and eleven great-grand nieces and nephews.Visitation and funeral services will be held on Monday, July 3, 2017, from 10:30 AM-12:30 PM at Gutterman-Musicant Funeral Home, 402 Park Street, Hackensack, NJ 07601, tel. 201-489-3800.
