Norman OvidShires1925 - 2016Norman Ovid "Norm" Shires died on December 1, 2016 at the age of 91. He was born on August 11, 1925 in Springbrook, OR to Ovid and Wanda (Clemenson) Shires. He graduated from Newberg High School in 1943, and graduated from Moler Barber College in Portland, OR in 1947. He served in the U.S. Navy from 1943-1946 aboard two ships, the USS General Bliss and the USS Titania. He served in both the Pacific and Atlantic during World War II. Norm married Marion Rowland on March 9, 1947 in Newberg, OR. He was a barber for 43 years. He moved to Cottage Grove in 1948 and barbered there for 42 years, retiring in 1990. Norm's interests included hunting and fishing, especially at Odell Lake. He enjoyed all kinds of sports, and was an avid OSU Beaver fan. He was a charter member of Elks Lodge 1904, and was also a member of the American Legion and the VFW. He is survived by daughter, Sharon (David) Rennert of Cottage Grove; son, Terry (Susanne) Shires of San Diego, CA; three grandchildren and one great-grandchild. He was preceded in death by his wife, Marion; brother, Ken Shires; and sister, Dorothy Miller. A Celebration of Life will be held at 3:00 PM on Monday, December 12, at the Elks Lodge in Cottage Grove.
