Oliver G. HessOjai, CAOliver Greenhill Hess, lawyer, movie producer, adored and devoted husband and father, died peacefully at home, surrounded by his family, on January 30, 2017, in Ojai, California. He was 67.His death was due to complications from an aortic resection surgery. Oliver was born on July 14, 1949, in Chicago, Illinois. His parents, John David Hess, writer, and Jane Vosper Hess, community activist, raised their two children on the family farm in New Hope, Pennsylvania, where Oliver attended Buckingham Friends School, and Solebury School. While enrolled at Dartmouth College, Oliver enjoyed a two-year hiatus to play guitar in a rock n' roll band. He graduated from Dartmouth in 1971.His decision to obtain a law degree came after working for two years in downtown Newark, New Jersey. He gradated from Notre Dame Law School in 1979, and worked for several years as an entertainment lawyer in Los Angeles, including time at Greenberg, Glusker, Fields, Claman and Machtinger. In 1985, Oliver partnered with his friend Kevin Kallberg to create Hess-Kallberg Associates, a movie distribution and production company. Oliver and his wife have lived in Ojai for 25 years. For eleven of those years, Oliver lawyered with the Ventura County Child Protective Services, helping abused and neglected children. After retiring, Oliver founded and ran a legal-aid clinic for veterans at the Ventura County Veteran's Center, where he worked pro bono for the past three years. Oliver is survived by his wife of 33 years, Leslie Toomay Hess, his sons, John Toomay Hess, of San Francisco, California, and Carl Toomay Hess, of Ventura, California, his daughter, Noriah Daria Johnson, of Ojai, California, and his brother, Anthony Hess, of Kintnersville, Pennsylvania.
